Two Reasons for Tears

from the poetic exhibit volume i : the intimacy of laughter

I remember the day my spirit was heavy,

And I walked with sadness, light as a feather.

When it becomes routine, it’s not too much to think about,

So I carried those hidden talents to your doorstep,

Until they could no longer hide.

The day finally came when the weight of it all

Would be carried in the arms of a friend

While they witnessed

The sound of a cry that pierced their soul.

As they held me without question.

That was the day safety became a net.

I remember the day my spirit was glowing,

And I walked with laughter, free as a bird.

When it happens like the first time, it’s all you want to carry,

So I brought that joy everywhere we went,

Until we could see it in every situation.

There was no day without laughter

That bellowed deep from within

To have us wailing as we fought for our breath.

That was the day the net became a playground.

Tears from pain,

Tears from joy,

I stripped myself before you in agony,

I stripped myself before you in delight.

On two different occasions,

For two different reasons,

Yet the love remains the same.
